I am the Salt and Light of the Earth - Matthew 5:13-14
by Sheila Weddle

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." - Matthew 5:13-14

Jesus is speaking in metaphors that show how Christians are to influnce the world. Salt means "adding flavor". When we prepare our food we add the seasoning to make it palatable. We want to enjoy what we eat. When we are around people we want to enjoy the conversation. Our desire is for what we say to be received with joy and encouragement.

Salt also causes us to be thirsty. As we speak with others they should become thirsty for Christ. The Word says in Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." There are so many people hurting with no peace in their lives, we as Christians should have the hope to give them.

Another methaphor used in this scripture is "light". People have painful areas in their lives. The darkness may be their health, finances, relationships. So many sad and hard places that we some times go through. When we speak with them the light in us, which is the Word of God, and the Spirit of God, should pentrate into their lives. Through us they can see that God does have a good plan. Many times hardship comes into our lives but when we give it to God and trust His Word, then light is truly seen at the end of the tunnel.
We are in the kingdom of God we are citizens of Heaven. John 8:12 "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

Let the Word of God be your standard not your circumstances. Those things come and go, Matthew 24:35 "heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."

We offer others what God has given to us.

We have peace. John 16:33 "in Me you may have peace."

We have joy. John 15:11 "that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

We have hope. Romans 15:13 "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

We have all of that and much more on the inside of us. His Word will never pass away. It will never return void. The Word must become salt and light in us so that we can help others get thirsty and see the light of the world, our Jesus.

Confess this: When I speak to others I am salt and light. I will bring hope, peace and joy to them in the name of Jesus.

Father, I pray for my friend now to receive revelation of the wonderful attributes that are alive inside of them because of what Jesus has done. In Jesus Name. Amen.

To the Glory of God,
